So last night was deimos' final night in SF and I demanded that he spend it hanging out and exploring with me. He picked me up and we stopped off at Hanabi for sushi to fuel our later explorations. Sushi was awesome as usual and it was good to sit and trade stories. He does not say "hh" IRL, but does say "ohmygod" and "what the". He made me squeamish with tales of eating cockroaches and made me giggle at his tales of staying in Japan. After food, we headed out to Treasure Island, initially with the hopes of photographing the skyline across the bay. However the heavy misty sort of fog prevented that, and besides, I forgot to grab my tripod. So instead we drove around and explored. We found a giant unguarded turrent gun that had an open door on it and a ladder leading up. I need to go back with a flatbed truck I think. There was a mostly unguarded ship, I don't know much about ships but I assume it was about the size of a Coast Guard Cutter. It was big (to me) but not battleship big. It was also painted matte grey and I wanted it. It had lots of spiky bits and gun looking things. With it I would be the Dread Pirate Hep of the SF Bay. Avast ye scurvy dogs! Arrr! I would make Tanya my first mate and we would have peg legs and knitted eyepatches. The Black Knitters! After awhile we had exhausted our source of break-into-able buildings (it's a small island) and had seen the cop car roll by one too many times, so we decided to head back to the city. I had been wanting to check out the abandoned Public Health Hospital in the Presidio at night for awhile, so we did some quick hiptop google searching to find the general street location and after briefly stopping for gas, redbull, and a flashlight, headed off. It wasn't too hard to find, it's a massive structure right where 15th ave. dead-ends into Lake. It's about seven pr eight stories (depending on the wing) and a sub-basement, possibly with a basement below that. It's been hit up pretty good with graffiti, but not as much as you would expect if it has been closed for 22 years. Many windows are busted out as well, but again, not as much as should have been for so long uninhabited. We circled the outer fence looking for weak spots before stumbling onto a place where someone took wirecutters to it and folded it back. We then explored trying to find the way in. The sub-basement and first story windows are all boarded over. All the doors are locked with heavy chains and thick padlocks. Many of the windows are also barred or grated from the inside. The boarded are all triple bolted on, huge plywood sheets. There is a walkway that goes from the top of the hill across to the highest story, but halfway across there is a gate that extends far out so you can't climb over or around. At one point we were checking the doors down the stairwells into the sub-basement and we hear this alarm that is going off from inside. Totally creepy. Eventually we found the way in, but by that point I was way too cold, wet, and scared to get inside. So I am thinking about going back next weekend, anyone up for exploring a creepy, haunted abandoned hospital in the middle of the night? I want at least four people, so I have sufficient victims to throw the zombies when they come for us. I miss deimos, he is uberfun to hang out with, funny, amusing, doesn't mind doing illegal things in the middle of the night, doesn't care when I jump on him because I hear a scary noise. AND he only mocks me a little bit about my rabid fear of zombies. :D He should totally move out here. He took some pictures of the hospital last night. You can also read his account of what happened.
